The Woodsman's Lament

by Rachelle Armstead

/

about

This song was inspired by a story that I heard a long time ago. A man finds a fey woman in the woods. The two fall in love and get married, but over time, the woman grows homesick. When the woodsman refuses to let her leave, fearing that she will never return, the woman dies of a broken heart.

lyrics

I met a woman in the wayward wood
Whose hair was wild as the willow tree.
She spoke no words but I understood
Her wayward heart belonged to me.

I took her hand and I led her home.
I loved her 'til I couldn't see
That though her eyes saw more than one
Her wayward heart belonged to me.

I bound her hair and I chained her feet.
I burned the forest for the tree,
And as she died, she whispered sweet,
"My wayward heart belongs to thee."
