The Mermaid

by Rachelle Armstead

/

about

The lyrics for this song come from the poem "The Mermaid" by William Butler Yeats. In the poem, an infatuated mermaid accidentally drowns the object of her affection because she forgets that he can't breathe underwater. Although the mermaid in the poem had innocent intentions and may have felt remorse for her actions, the sirens singing her tale do not. The melody carries a careless, mocking tone, and the harmony is somewhat ambiguous, representing the amoral character that mermaids are usually prescribed.
